Biography

Carlos L. Muñoz Brenes is the Director of Social Science in the Moore Center for Science at Conservation International (CI). He is from Costa Rica and has over twenty years of experience working on impact evaluation, policy analysis, governance, conservation and development, and practice in Latin America and the Caribbean. Before joining CI, Carlos worked as Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist at the US Embassy-San Jose for Dexis Consulting Group assessing and monitoring effectiveness of US Government programs. He also worked as a policy analyst and research fellow for the Research Program in Economics and Environment for Development (EfD-Central America) at the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE). He is former executive director of the Monteverde Conservation League and manager of the largest private reserve in Costa Rica, the Children’s Eternal Rainforest. He has also taught many courses and carried out numerous international consultancies. Carlos holds a Ph.D. in management of natural resources from the University of Idaho, a master’s degree in international environmental policy and development economics from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and a second master’s degree in Political Science from Boston College. He graduated with a BA in Ecotourism from the University of Costa Rica. Birdwatching is one of his passions. He also enjoys bushwhacking and cruising in the woods. Carlos lives in Arlington, VA with his wife Shirley, their son Héctor Emilio, and their adopted mixed-border collie Pitt.
